Location and Landscape -Best Kenya Safaris
Located in the East African region, Kenya is approximately 58,036,700 hectares (of which 1,122,700 hectares are water area). Its coastline is about 333 miles long and stretches along the Indian Ocean from the border of Somalia to Tanzania (to the south).
Known for being the 22nd largest country in the African Continent, Kenya also shares its borders with five countries, which include Ethiopia to the North and South Sudan to the northwest, Somalia to its East, Tanzania to its South, & Uganda (to the West).
Kenya’s interior is comprised of varying landscapes that transition from the white sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean, the arid northern deserts, savannahs and grasslands, the stunning Great Rift Valley, to the central mountain highlands.

Why Kenya Should be on Your Bucket list
Have you ever dreamed of exploring the African Continent and wondered where to enjoy an unforgettable safari experience? Kenya should definitely be on your bucket list, and we shall tell you why. Generally, African safaris are usually the biggest drawcard when it comes to authentic wilderness experiences, and we can boldly say Kenya has something for everyone.
Nairobi, which is the capital, has a wonderfully relaxed, vibrant cosmopolitan feel marked with rich history, World-class restaurants and Cafes, and the iconic National Park.
One of the reasons why Kenya should be on your bucket list is because of its safety. This country’s ecosystem is well managed, with expert staff, and most safari experiences are conducted in accordance with international standards. Most National Parks and Wildlife Reserves are protected by armed guards, hence providing safety to guests.
Outstanding Wildlife to Explore on Kenya Safaris
There is no doubt that another reason why hundreds of thousands of travelers head to Kenya is its wildlife species. Without even leaving the Capital, you can visit its popular Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage, and many others.
If you are interested in more wildlife experiences, then Masai Mara Wildlife Reserve shouldn’t be missed on your itinerary. Here, you will see the Big Five Game in addition to experiencing the World-class wildebeest migration.
However, Nairobi National Park and Masai Mara Wildlife Reserve are just two of the 50 Protected Areas dotted across Kenya’s foremost wild spaces.
Breathtaking landscapes
Much as most first-time travelers to magical Kenya will be most acquainted with its stunning savannah plains, this country’s landscapes range from rugged mountain ranges to beautiful white sandy beaches.
Kenya is undoubtedly a photographer’s paradise, and if you are a lover of the outdoors, then you will be blown away by the panoramas that sweep across the Aberdare mountain ranges and Mount Kenya.
Mind-blowing history
You don’t have to be a historian, history buff, or enthusiast to fall for the tales that stem from Kenya’s mind-blowing past, which spans millions of years of human evolution, bustling coastal trade, colonial struggle (especially the MAU MAU rebellion), as well as modern independence.
You can get a chance to explore some of the oldest evidence of human ancestors that date back millions of years in the Rift Valley and Turkana region.
Incredible year-round weather
Located astride the Equator and in the Eastern hemisphere, Kenya naturally enjoys a tropical climate. This makes it perfect for escaping winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
For this reason, when you visit the country in the dry season, you might require little more than long-sleeved shirts/t-shirts and shorts. You will most likely think of a sweater in the rainy season or when you head to the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya area.
Other reasons to include Kenya on your bucket list include the fact that you will get value for your money, as the country delivers its incredible sights and attractions, the country’s diverse and phenomenal cultural experiences, and mouthwatering cuisine that you can’t afford to miss.
Where to go for Kenya Safaris
With so much on offer, one of the questions first-time travelers have regarding Kenya is where to go for unforgettable experiences. While the Masai Mara Reserve is usually the first place that comes to anyone’s mind, there’s so much on offer. Here are some of our recommended safari destinations in Kenya;
The Masai Mara Wildlife Reserve: Great Wildebeest Migration and Big Five Game
This 151,000-hectare protected area is synonymous with the Great annual Migration, whereby it receives millions of wildebeests accompanied by zebras and gazelles coming from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park.
Aside from that, it is also a wonderful place to see the Big Five Game (lions, leopards, Buffaloes, Rhinos, and Elephants), Masai giraffes, impalas, Defassa waterbucks, warthogs, Topis, and baboons, among others.
Activities such as game drives, guided walking safaris, and hot air balloon tours usually add to the adventure, but staying in luxurious Camps/Lodges while experiencing world-class spas, fine dining, private villas, bush meals, and sundowners combine to deliver memorable Kenya safari experiences.
When it comes to places to stay, you will be amazed by the diversity here. From budget-friendly Lodges to private Safari Camps and Lodges, there is something for everyone in the Masai Mara Wildlife Reserve.
Amboseli National Park
Popular for its large herds of free-ranging elephants and the spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park provides a quintessential Kenyan safari experience. Here, you can see four of the Big Five Game – Leopards, lions, elephants, and Buffaloes, as well as the long-necked gerenuk, Masai giraffes, zebras, and the rare fringe-eared oryx, among others. You can’t afford to miss exploring the observation hill, from where views over the savannah plains can be enjoyed, and the Enkongo Narok swamp for its high animal concentration and bird-watching experiences.
Mount Kenya: World-class Mountaineering experiences
For the adventure seekers out there, you will find Mount Kenya interesting. Besides its world-class mountaineering experiences to the continent’s second-highest peak, it provides a remarkable wildlife-viewing experience. This mountain has three peaks: Batian at 5199 meters, Nelion at 5188 meters, and Lenana at 4985 meters. Enjoy the wildlife, birds, and stunning surroundings while summiting this mountain.
Nairobi City and Nairobi National Park- the wild Capital
Most Kenya safaris start from the Capital, Nairobi, and while many travelers only spend the night in transit, there is more you can do. It has a whole National Park on its doorstep, and there’s nothing more unforgettable than photographing giraffes, Hippos, or lions with towering skyscrapers on the horizon. You can also explore the Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Center, and the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, among others.
Diani Beach, Best Spot to Visit for Kenya Safaris
Located in the south of Mombasa, Diani Beach is another unmissable safari destination in Kenya with an extended area of white sand as well as turquoise water, and blanketed with palm trees. This is the ideal place to go for a honeymoon, unwinding, and water sports (diving, snorkeling, and others), making it the climax of most Kenya safaris.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Known for its flamingo-fringed Lake, this Protected Area is also an incredible wildlife-viewing experience, especially if you are looking to see lions, leopards, giraffes, and Rhinos in a secluded setting. This is also a renowned birding destination with over 450 species to look out for.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy- known for sheltering the last Northern white Rhinos
Nestled on the Laikipia Plateau, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is one of the country’s incredible conservation success stories; hence it is East Africa’s largest Sanctuary for black Rhinos. Most importantly, it is popular for sheltering the World’s last two Northern white Rhinos.
However, there are other wildlife species here, and they include elephants, lions, and leopards, which can be encountered in a secluded setting (because the area receives fewer visitors compared to other popular places).
- Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park: world-class cycling among wildlife
There are few places where you can get to cycle among wildlife, and Hell’s Gate National Park is one of them. You get the chance to ride past giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and others while stopping to enjoy views of the red cliffs and hiking the magical gorges and hot springs along the way.
After an adventurous time discovering Hell’s Gate National Park, you can relax with a boat ride on Lake Naivasha, where you will be introduced to some of the 400 bird species that call the area home.
Lamu Island
Known for its rich Swahili culture, extraordinary architecture, and breathtaking beaches, Lamu Island shouldn’t be missed on your bucket list for Kenya safaris. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for blending African, Indian, Persian, Omani, and European cultures. While here, you can attend some of the cultural festivals (especially the Maulidi and Lamu cultural festivals), tour its old town by walking through the narrow streets, and explore some of its historical landmarks such as the Lamu Fort, the Lamu Museum, among others.
Other phenomenal places to explore during Kenya safaris include the Samburu Wildlife Reserve, Mara Naboisho Conservancy, Laikipia Plateau, Lewa Conservancy, and many others.
The perfect time to go for Kenya safaris
Kenya safaris are excellent at any time of the year. However, the dry season (from June to September) is probably the most perfect time to explore the country on a safari, though, and it is justifiably popular.
The natural phenomena associated with the dry season– reduced rainfall and shrinking vegetation make animals converge around waterholes. This creates unforgettable wildlife viewing experiences, thus making it the peak season.
As dry conditions prevail, the vegetation thins and animals tend to concentrate around permanent water sources, making wildlife visibility at its peak.
This is also the most amazing time to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara Reserve, which culminates in the dramatic crossing of the River Mara.
Therefore, the dry season is the prime safari season in Kenya, and accommodation rates reflect it.
The Green season, from October to December, then March to May, brings rains, verdant vegetation, newborn animals, and migratory birds.
Vegetation growth and increased water sources make wildlife harder to spot, although the landscape is at its most beautiful.
The green season is also the low season; thus, lower accommodation rates apply in most places, especially around Protected Areas.
Practical Kenya safari Planning: What you need to know before you book
Kenya Visa and Entry
When it comes to Kenya Visa requirements, it is important to note that they vary by Nationality, and the majority of Western passport holders are required to obtain Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) through the portal prior to departure.
We advise checking with Flawless Adventure Planners for the prevailing requirements before travel.
Currency
The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES/KSh). At the time of writing, the exchange rate is: USD 1= approximately 129-130, 1GBP= approximately 173-174.
You will notice that the accommodations quoted in Kenyan Shillings offer significant savings for International travelers at the present rates.
Health and Vaccinations
At the time of writing, yellow fever vaccination is required for travelers arriving from/or transiting (12 hours or more) from yellow fever-endemic countries. Other routine vaccinations such as Tetanus and Hepatitis A are recommended. We recommend carrying some anti-malarial medication, especially when visiting savannah destinations.
Tipping
While it is not mandatory to tip during Kenya safaris, it is recommended and is a crucial part of Guide, ranger, and staff income in National Parks/Reserves and accommodations.
It is advisable to give at least USD 10 to 25 per person per day for a guide, USD 5-10 per person per day for a park ranger, and USD 5 per person per day for accommodation staff.
For restaurant waiters/waitresses, 10% of the bill amount is a good idea. Tipping in the local currency is most preferred.
What to pack for Kenya safari
When planning your Kenya safari wardrobe, look past red carpet fashion because it is mostly about comfort, blending into the natural environment, and sun protection.
For colors, we recommend brown, khaki, beige, grey, tan, dark green, or Olive. Some colors should be avoided: white because it reflects light and shows dust easily, and black because it absorbs heat and can be uncomfortable during game drives.
When it comes to layering, it is advisable to choose thermal base layer and fleece mid-layer and wind-resistant outer layer for game drives.
The items we recommend for Kenya safaris include a rain jacket, shorts (number depends on the safari duration). Long-sleeved shirts. T-shirts, sandals/light shoes. Swimsuit (as most Lodges/Camps/Hotels have swimming pools), a pair of binoculars, a camera as wildlife photography is a must. Other items include a flashlight, a power bank, insect repellent, sunscreen, personal medication, a basic first aid kit, and comfortable hiking/walking boots,
Exclusive Kenya Combo Safari Options
Your Kenya safari can easily be combined with;
- Uganda (visit to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking tours, Kibale National Park for chimpanzee tracking and birding tours).
- Tanzania (Serengeti National Park for the Great Wildebeest Migration and Big Five Game, Mount Kilimanjaro for mountaineering experiences, Zanzibar for honeymoon and cultural experiences, etc.).
- South Africa (Kruger National Park, Cape Town, and others).
- Victoria Falls (the Devil’s and Angel’s Pools).
